Lens Art — Where Creativity Meets Optics | The Optical Gallery
If you’ve followed our YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram for a while, you’ve probably heard me refer to myself as a Lens Artist.
It’s a term I’ve coined over the years, not self-proclaimed, but something lens labs, clients, and even other opticians have said to me:
“This isn’t customisation… this is art.”
So today, I want to break down what Lens Art really is, and why it has become such a defining part of what we do at The Optical Gallery.
What Is Lens Art?
Tinting a lens isn’t Lens Art.
Adding a photochromic layer isn’t Lens Art.
Lens Art is when you fuse optical science, creativity, lifestyle understanding, and aesthetic intuition into one cohesive vision.
A true Lens Artist:
studies a client’s visual lifestyle, personality, wardrobe, daily behaviour
matches specific tints to mood, enhancement, purpose, and style
works with advanced materials like Marma London’s Dinamica photochromic lenses
layers tints + custom tinted photochromic lenses + mirrors + coatings with intention
understands how frame materials and shapes influence the final look
creates lenses that feel expressive, functional, and personal
treats every pair like a design project, not a transaction
Lens Art is:
science + creativity + personality + purpose.
Not “what colour do you like?”
But “how should the world look through your eyes?”
Where My Lens Art Philosophy Comes From
Before optics… I lived a completely different creative life.
I have been:
- a music video director
- a photographer
- an A&R, developing artists’ careers
- a campaign manager
- a studio obsessive
- an artist from childhood
- and at one point, I even deep-dived into perfumery, learning how mixing oils creates mood and emotion
If something involved creativity, I obsessed over it.
When I returned to optics, I realised something instantly:
I didn’t want optics to be boring.
I wanted to turn optics into culture.
Combine:
- 25 years of dispensing expertise
- an obsessive creative personality
- a love for niche independent eyewear
- and the ability to work with advanced materials like custom tinted photochromic lenses and Dinamica lenses by Marma London
…and suddenly a blank lens isn’t a product — it’s a canvas.
That is where Lens Art was born.
Lens Art vs “Custom Lenses”
Most opticians can add a tint.
Some can select a nice photochromic.
A few can layer two elements.
Lens Art goes far deeper:
- Who are you visually?
- What does your daily life look like?
- What emotions suit your personality?
- What tint and coating blend complements your frame?
- Should we build something warm? Cool? Punchy? Subtle?
- What enhances your comfort, mood, and aesthetic identity?
- Will this work in low light and bright sun?
- Does this combination elevate you functionally and stylistically?
Lens Art is identity design.
It’s not decoration, it’s expression.
