Inside The World of Niche Eyewear: Masunaga, Theo, Kuboraum, Sabine Be, Götti & The Future of Lens Art™

There are few weekends in the optical calendar that generate as much excitement as 100% Optical.

For independent opticians, eyewear enthusiasts and collectors, it’s an opportunity to discover what’s new, reconnect with friends in the industry and explore the future of eyewear.

This year, however, started slightly differently.

Having landed back from Milan the night before, I found myself heading straight back into London. Before setting foot on the exhibition floor, I made a stop to visit Jason from Independent Eyewear, who represents two brands I have long admired: Masunaga and LA Eyeworks.

What followed was a reminder of exactly why niche independent eyewear continues to captivate people all over the world.

Why Masunaga Continues To Dominate Conversations

If you’ve spent any time researching luxury eyewear recently, you’ve probably come across Masunaga.

The Japanese manufacturer has become one of the most talked-about names in independent eyewear, and for good reason.

The craftsmanship is exceptional.

The attention to detail is relentless.

Every hinge, every engraving and every finish feels intentional.

Whilst many people gravitate towards the Masters of Craft collection, I found myself increasingly drawn towards the Kenzo Takada collection.

The Taka model remains one of my personal favourites.

Its combination of matte grey and gold detailing creates a frame that feels luxurious without ever becoming loud. It’s a frame that reveals itself gradually, rewarding the wearer every time they pick it up.

This is one of the reasons why Japanese eyewear continues to command such respect. It isn’t trying to impress you immediately. It earns your appreciation over time.

Independent Eyewear Is About More Than Fashion

One thing that often surprises people is how much emotion exists within eyewear.

Most consumers assume glasses are simply functional.

Those of us who spend our lives around independent eyewear know differently.

A great frame doesn’t just change how you look.

It changes how you feel.

That philosophy runs through brands like Masunaga, Theo Eyewear, Kuboraum, Sabine Be and Götti Switzerland.

Each approaches eyewear differently, yet all share a common belief that glasses should have personality.

Not branding.

Not logos.

Personality.

Theo Eyewear And The Art Of Individuality

Back at The Optical Gallery, a very special project was waiting.

A pair of 24-carat gold-plated Theo frames.

Theo has always occupied a unique place within the eyewear world. While many brands follow trends, Theo tends to create its own universe entirely.

The frame itself was already stunning.

The real excitement, however, came from the lenses.

Because at The Optical Gallery, we don’t simply fit lenses.

We create Lens Art™.

What Is Lens Art™?

Lens Art™ is our approach to customising lenses beyond traditional dispensing.

It’s the process of combining tints, coatings, photochromic technologies and visual enhancement techniques to create a completely bespoke visual experience.

For some clients, that means subtle elegance.

For others, it means bold self-expression.

Increasingly, clients are travelling from across the UK and internationally because they want something that simply isn’t available on the high street.

Custom tinted lenses.

Tinted photochromic lenses.

Bespoke lens combinations.

Atmosphere.

Mood.

Enhancement.

Not just correction.

The Rise Of Custom Tinted Photochromic Lenses

Perhaps the biggest shift we’ve seen over the past few years is the growing demand for customised photochromic lenses.

Historically, photochromics were chosen purely for convenience.

They darkened outdoors.

They cleared indoors.

Job done.

Today, clients want much more.

They want lenses that complement their frame.

They want colour.

They want individuality.

They want their lenses to become part of the overall design.

This is where technologies such as Dinamica Photochromic and Marma lenses have become incredibly exciting.

Unlike traditional photochromics, Dinamica allows us to create custom tinted photochromic lenses that combine colour, style and visual experience in a way that simply wasn’t possible a few years ago.

It’s one of the reasons Lens Art™ has become such an important part of what we do.

Götti Switzerland: Quiet Luxury Done Properly

Later in the day, I spent some time with the latest Götti Switzerland collection.

Few brands understand restraint quite like Götti.

Their designs aren’t trying to shout.

They’re trying to refine.

The new Couture collection immediately stood out.

Beautiful shapes.

Exceptional finishing.

Buffalo horn details.

And that unmistakable Swiss precision.

One of the things I admire most about Götti is their ability to create something modern without chasing fashion.

The result is eyewear that remains relevant year after year.

Leisure Society And The Beauty Of Craftsmanship

Back in the workshop, a client from overseas had entrusted us with a beautiful Leisure Society frame.

This particular piece featured British Racing Green acetate, decorative detailing and some of the most impressive construction I’ve seen in recent years.

The project itself was equally interesting.

Rather than creating a conventional prescription lens, we designed a bespoke solution that better suited the client’s lifestyle.

This is where independent opticians have a genuine advantage.

We aren’t limited to standard solutions.

We can create lenses around people rather than forcing people into lens categories.

Kuboraum And The Power Of Atmosphere

Few brands generate as much conversation as Kuboraum.

Part eyewear.

Part sculpture.

Part wearable architecture.

A recent Kuboraum project arriving from America perfectly demonstrated something we’ve been exploring more and more at The Optical Gallery.

Not every custom lens needs to be dramatic.

Sometimes the most powerful customisations are the subtle ones.

A carefully selected graduated tint.

A perfectly matched lens colour.

A premium coating.

The result isn’t louder.

It’s simply more complete.

That philosophy sits at the heart of many of our Lens Art™ projects.

Sabine Be: Masters Of Colour

Another highlight was preparing for our upcoming Sabine Be exhibition.

If there is one brand that truly understands colour, it is Sabine Be.

The acetate combinations are extraordinary.

Bold.

Playful.

Expressive.

Yet somehow still wearable.

There is a reason figures such as Elton John continue to wear Sabine Be.

The brand understands something many companies forget.

Eyewear should be fun.

Why Independent Eyewear Is Thriving

For years, consumers have been told that luxury eyewear is about logos.

Independent eyewear offers a different perspective.

It’s about craftsmanship.

It’s about individuality.

It’s about wearing something because it speaks to you, not because a marketing department told you to buy it.

Brands such as Theo Eyewear, Masunaga, Kuboraum, Götti Switzerland and Sabine Be continue to prove that there is another way.

And thankfully, more people are discovering it every year.

The Future Of Eyewear

As technology continues to evolve, we’re seeing an exciting collision between craftsmanship and personalisation.

Custom tinted lenses.

Tinted photochromic lenses.

Dinamica photochromic technology.

Marma lenses.

Lens Art™.

These aren’t replacing great eyewear.

They’re enhancing it.

The frame remains the canvas.

The lenses become the atmosphere.

And together they create something entirely unique.

Final Thoughts

One of the reasons we created Raw & Uncut was to give people a genuine look behind the scenes of independent optical culture.

Not the polished marketing version.

The real version.

The workshops.

The exhibitions.

The brands.

The craftsmanship.

The people.

Whether you’re researching Theo Eyewear, discovering Kuboraum for the first time, exploring Masunaga, searching for Götti Switzerland, interested in Sabine Be, or curious about custom tinted photochromic lenses and Lens Art™, I hope this glimpse into our world has shown that eyewear can be far more than simply something you wear on your face.

At its best, eyewear becomes a form of self-expression.

And that’s exactly why we love it.
