What Makes Masunaga Eyewear So Special? Inside 120 Years of Japanese Craftsmanship

What Makes Masunaga Eyewear So Special? Inside 120 Years of Japanese Craftsmanship

Among people who take eyewear seriously, a few names are spoken about with genuine reverence. Masunaga is one of them. It rarely shouts, it carries no oversized logo, and it isn’t the name most people would recognise on a high street, and that is precisely the point. For those who know, Masunaga represents something quieter and rarer: some of the finest handcrafted eyewear made anywhere in the world.

This autumn, The Optical Gallery is bringing the complete Masunaga collection to Twickenham for a one-day exhibition. Before we get to that, it’s worth understanding what makes these frames so quietly extraordinary, and why enthusiasts will travel to see them.

Who are Masunaga?

Masunaga Optical was founded in 1905 in Fukui, on the west coast of Japan, by Gozaemon Masunaga. At the time, Japan had no real eyewear industry to speak of. Masunaga changed that, bringing in skilled craftsmen from Osaka and Tokyo and establishing a system to train a new generation of makers. He is widely regarded as the father of the Japanese optical industry, and Fukui went on to become one of the most respected eyewear-manufacturing regions in the world, producing the overwhelming majority of Japan’s frames to this day.

The brand’s reputation was sealed early. In the 1930s, Masunaga craftsmen created a set of solid-gold spectacle frames presented to the Japanese Emperor, an honour that earned Masunaga a lasting association with imperial quality. More than 120 years after it began, the company is still making eyewear in Fukui, to the same uncompromising standard.

What makes the craftsmanship so different?

Masunaga’s reputation rests on how its frames are made. Where much of the eyewear market relies on speed and scale, Masunaga does close to the opposite.

Each frame can pass through up to 200 separate manual steps. The company is one of very few eyewear makers in the world to control virtually every stage of production in-house, from raw material through to the final hand-polish, which gives it extraordinary command over quality. Titanium is worked until it becomes almost weightless on the face; Japanese acetate is hand-polished to a depth and lustre that machine-finishing simply cannot reach; and details most wearers will never consciously notice, such as the durable seven-barrel hinges and distinctive rivets, are finished with the same care as the parts you do see.

The result is eyewear that feels different to wear, balanced, light and quietly precise, and that is built to last for years rather than seasons. It is craftsmanship as a philosophy rather than a marketing line.

The collections: K3 by Kenzo Takada and Masters of Craft

The exhibition will showcase the full breadth of Masunaga’s work, including two collections that are particularly special.

K3 by Kenzo Takada brings together Masunaga’s Japanese craftsmanship and the creative vision of the late, celebrated fashion designer Kenzo Takada. It’s where precise engineering meets a more expressive, design-led sensibility, recognisably Masunaga in quality, but with a distinct character.

Then there is Masters of Craft, Masunaga’s pinnacle collection, and widely regarded as some of the finest handcrafted eyewear in the world. Produced in editions of just 150 pieces worldwide, these frames are genuinely rare and highly sought after by collectors internationally. For many enthusiasts, seeing them in person is an opportunity that may not come again.

Why Masunaga has a cult following

In an era of heavily branded, logo-led fashion eyewear, Masunaga has taken the opposite path, and that’s exactly why it’s so admired by those in the know. There are no loud badges or status markers. The appeal is in the quality itself: the feel of the frame, the precision of the finish, the sense of owning something made properly by people who care.

This is the definition of “quiet luxury”, pieces that reward the wearer rather than the onlooker. It’s why Masunaga has earned a devoted following among collectors, designers and eyewear enthusiasts around the world, and why it’s spoken about in the same breath as the very best in the field.

A rare chance to see the complete collection

Here in the UK, it’s unusual to see more than a handful of Masunaga frames in any one place. Seeing the complete collection, the full range, K3 by Kenzo Takada, and the exceptionally rare Masters of Craft, presented together under one roof is rarer still.

That’s exactly what The Optical Gallery is offering. For one day only, on Wednesday 28th October 2026, our Twickenham gallery becomes home to the complete Masunaga universe. You’ll also be able to pair any frame with our bespoke Lens Art service, creating individually designed prescription lenses, custom tints and photochromic options to finish your chosen piece perfectly.
