Why Won’t My Dry Eyes Go Away? Causes, Relief and Professional Treatment

If your eyes feel gritty, tired or irritated by the end of the day, or you're reaching for drops that help for an hour and then wear off, you're far from alone. Dry eye is one of the most common reasons people come to see us, and one of the most persistent. It's also one of the most misunderstood.

Here's the part that surprises most people: dry eye often isn't really about a lack of tears at all. And that single fact explains why so many people spend months using drops without ever getting to the bottom of it. With October marking World Sight Day, a good moment to think about eye health, here's what's actually going on, and what genuinely helps.

What causes dry eyes?

Dry eye happens when your tear film isn't doing its job, either because you aren't producing enough tears, or, far more commonly, because the tears you produce evaporate too quickly. Common contributors include:

  • Screen use. We blink far less when concentrating on a screen, sometimes less than half as often, which leaves the eye surface exposed for longer.
  • Age. Tear production naturally reduces as we get older.
  • Hormonal changes. Dry eye is notably more common around and after the menopause, which catches many people by surprise.
  • Environment. Air conditioning, central heating, wind and dry indoor air all accelerate tear evaporation.
  • Contact lens wear. Lenses can contribute to dryness for some wearers, particularly with long hours of use. Find the perfect contact lenses for dry eyes in Twickenham, Chessington or Cheam Village.
  • Eyelid problems. Inflammation or blockage along the eyelid margins, the part most people have never heard of, and often the most important of all.

Why are my eyes watering if they're dry?

This is the question we're asked most, and it sounds like a contradiction. It isn't.

When the surface of the eye becomes dry and irritated, it triggers a reflex that floods the eye with watery tears. But these reflex tears lack the oily layer that would normally stop them evaporating, so they spill over rather than sticking around and doing any good. The result is eyes that stream and feel dry at the same time.

So, if you've dismissed the possibility of dry eye because your eyes water, it's well worth reconsidering, watering is one of its classic signs.

Is it dry eye, or something else?

Several conditions feel similar, which is why self-diagnosis is tricky:

  • Allergies tend to cause itching as the dominant symptom, often alongside sneezing or a runny nose, and are frequently seasonal.
  • Conjunctivitis usually brings noticeable redness and sometimes discharge, and can come on relatively suddenly.
  • Simple tiredness or eye strain tends to ease with rest, whereas dry eye persists.

Dry eye can also cause vision to go intermittently blurry, typically clearing briefly when you blink. That's because an unstable tear film disrupts the eye's focusing surface. It's a common and usually reassuring explanation, but any change in vision is always worth having checked properly.

What helps dry eyes, and what to avoid

There's a lot you can do yourself, and for milder cases it may be enough:

  • Take regular screen breaks and make a conscious effort to blink fully
  • Use a warm compress on closed eyes to help loosen blocked oil glands along the lid margins
  • Keep the air around you from getting too dry, move away from direct air conditioning and heating vents where you can
  • Stay well hydrated
  • Artificial tear drops can give genuine short-term comfort, there are many types, and it's worth asking which suits your eyes rather than guessing

What to avoid: rubbing your eyes, which inflames things further; and assuming that drops alone will fix a problem that keeps returning. If you've been using drops for weeks and the symptoms always come back, that's a sign the underlying cause hasn't been addressed.

Why won't my dry eyes go away?

This is the heart of it. For a great many people, the root of their dry eye isn't the tear glands, it's the eyelids.

Along the edge of your eyelids sit tiny oil glands whose job is to produce the oily layer that stops your tears evaporating. Over time, debris, bacteria and a stubborn biofilm can build up along the lid margin, not unlike plaque on teeth, and inflame or block those glands. When that happens, the oily layer fails, tears evaporate too quickly, and dry eye becomes chronic.

Eye drops top up the water. They don't clean the lid margins or unblock the glands. That's why drops bring relief for an hour or two, and the symptoms keep coming straight back, the cause is still there. Breaking that cycle means treating the eyelids themselves.

Professional dry eye treatment at The Optical Gallery

The good news is that this is very treatable, and it starts with a proper assessment. Rather than guessing, your optometrist can examine your tear film and eyelid margins to establish what's actually driving your symptoms, and recommend accordingly.

Where eyelid build-up is the culprit, we offer ZEST (Zocular Eyelid System Treatment), an in-practice deep-cleanse of the eyelids and lash line using a gentle, natural okra-based gel. It lifts away the debris, bacteria and biofilm that drops simply can't reach, helping the oil glands work properly again.

It's quick and comfortable: the treatment itself takes around 10 to 15 minutes, there's no downtime, and many people notice a difference very soon afterwards. Because lid debris gradually rebuilds, ZEST is typically repeated around twice a year, and we'll usually recommend a simple at-home routine, such as the ZocuShield range, to maintain the results in between.

Book a dry eye assessment

If your eyes have felt gritty, tired or watery for weeks and nothing seems to shift it, you don't have to put up with it, and you don't have to keep guessing which drops to buy. A proper assessment will tell you what's actually causing it and what will genuinely help.

Our optometrists offer unhurried dry eye assessments at our practices in Twickenham, Cheam Village and Chessington.
