Commission: Hayati, Scotland

THE STORY

Some eyewear is designed for everyday life.

Other pieces have a rather different destination in mind.

Hayati contacted me from Scotland about his Cazal Legends 669. A distinctive frame in crystal acetate, with bold proportions, architectural detailing and intricate gold hardware.

The Cazal already had plenty of character. But Hayati wasn't entirely satisfied with the standard lenses.

He wanted something more playful. Something vibrant, unexpected and expressive.

And he had a very particular occasion in mind.

He wanted to wear them raving.

That changed the conversation considerably.

We weren't simply choosing a sunglass colour. We were designing something that needed to feel exciting, look extraordinary under different lighting conditions and make an already distinctive frame feel entirely his own.

Hayati had also found some inspiration.

He'd seen our friends at Hicks Brunson create a beautiful bi-colour combination using ZEISS Spicy Red and Magma Orange with Transitions photochromic lenses.

He loved the idea of combining those vivid colours with lenses that could change their appearance outdoors.

It was a wonderful starting point.

Now we needed to interpret it for his Cazals.

THE FRAME

CAZAL LEGENDS 669

There is something unmistakable about a Cazal.

The Legends 669 is unapologetic in its design. Strong geometry, sculptural construction and intricate metallic detailing give it a presence that few other frames can replicate.

Hayati's crystal acetate colourway adds another dimension.

The transparent material allows you to appreciate the construction, while the gold hardware introduces warmth and contrast.

It's a serious piece of eyewear.

But that doesn't mean it needs to be treated seriously all the time.

In fact, I liked the idea of taking something so architectural and introducing a completely different energy through the lenses.

The frame would retain its identity.

The lenses would change its personality.

THE INTERPRETATION

SPICY RED → MAGMA ORANGE

The starting point was colour.

Inspired by the combination Hayati had admired, I created a bespoke Spicy Red to Magma Orange bi-colour gradient.

The upper portion carries the stronger red-orange character, gradually transitioning towards a warmer, golden-orange tone below.

It's an expressive palette, but one that works particularly well with the crystal acetate.

The transparency of the frame allows the colour to become a much more prominent part of the overall composition.

Meanwhile, the warmer tones connect naturally with the gold accents throughout the Cazal.

What I particularly enjoy about these colours is the experience of looking through them.

Warm reds and oranges can create an incredibly vivid visual impression, changing the atmosphere of a scene and influencing how contrast and colour are perceived.

For Hayati, that was part of the appeal.

These weren't intended to be conventional dark sunglasses.

They were designed to create an experience.

And considering where he planned to wear them, I could already imagine how interesting they might look beneath the changing colours of club lighting.

Under the strobes, the glasses become part of the party.

THEN THE LIGHT CHANGES EVERYTHING

MARMA DINAMICA AMARANTH

There was another important part of Hayati's brief.

He wanted the lenses to have two different appearances.

The warm, vivid bi-colour gradient would give the glasses their indoor personality.

But outdoors, we wanted something much deeper.

Rather than using conventional Transitions, I selected Marma Dinamica Amaranth photochromic technology.

As the lenses respond to UV light, the Amaranth colour develops, transforming the lighter red-orange composition into a much richer, darker red.

The result is almost blood-red.

It's a dramatic change, particularly against the transparent acetate.

And because the original colour design remains part of the overall composition, the activated appearance has depth rather than simply becoming a flat, uniform tint.

The warm gradient gives way to something darker, more intense and distinctly different.

For Hayati, this meant the glasses could move between environments while retaining their character.

Inside, they're vibrant and expressive.

Outside, under the sun at a beach rave, they develop into something altogether more dramatic.

One frame. Two personalities.

The important distinction is that Dinamica responds primarily to UV exposure, rather than club strobes themselves. The indoor colour is the deliberately designed base tint; the deeper red develops when sufficient activating UV is present.

THE FINAL LAYER

A TOUCH OF GOLD

There was one final detail I wanted to bring into the composition.

The Cazal 669 has beautiful gold hardware running through its construction.

I didn't want that relationship between the frame and the lenses to end with the tint.

So we finished the lenses with a Glamour coating.

Alongside its anti-reflective properties, Glamour introduces a subtle golden sheen across the lens surface.

Depending on the angle and lighting, that reflection becomes more apparent, creating an effect reminiscent of a delicate flash mirror.

It was particularly appropriate for this commission.

The gold reflection connects visually with the Cazal's hardware, while the warmer lens colours complement the crystal acetate.

And under artificial lighting, that surface reflection introduces another dimension to the design.

It's a small detail.

But these are often the details that make a bespoke composition feel complete.

The frame, tint, photochromic colour and coating were considered together.

Not as separate products, but as parts of one design.

DESIGNED FOR AFTER HOURS

There is something I particularly enjoy about commissions like Hayati's.

He already owned an extraordinary frame.

He didn't need another pair of glasses.

What he wanted was to experience the ones he already had differently.

And that is an important distinction.

The inspiration came from something he'd seen elsewhere. The frame came from his own collection. The intended destination was the rave scene.

My role was to understand those influences and bring them together into something that felt coherent.

The result is expressive without losing the Cazal's original character.

Vibrant indoors.

Deep red outdoors.

A subtle golden reflection connecting the whole composition.

And an entirely different experience from the standard lenses the frame arrived with.

From Scotland to London, and back again.

Ready for wherever the music takes him.

ABOUT THIS COMMISSION

Hayati's Cazal Legends 669 demonstrates how bespoke lens design can change the character of eyewear without changing the frame itself.

The combination of custom colour, photochromic technology and specialist lens finishing was developed around his personal style and the environments in which he intended to wear the glasses.

It wasn't about creating the darkest lens or the most dramatic colour simply for the sake of it.

It was about understanding what Hayati wanted from his eyewear.

A serious frame. A playful interpretation.

And a pair of glasses designed for life after hours.
