Chrome Hearts Smoke Show — Bespoke Photochromic Prescription Lenses
Lens Art® Interpretation — Smoke & Mirrors
James brought his new Chrome Hearts Smoke Show to The Optical Gallery with what initially sounded like a straightforward request.
He needed his prescription fitted.
But when somebody has chosen a frame with this much character, simply making the lenses clear enough to see through can feel like a missed opportunity.
The Smoke Show was already luxury eyewear.
Our role was to make the lenses feel as considered as the frame surrounding them.
That became the starting point for this Lens Art® commission.

The Frame — Chrome Hearts Smoke Show
The Smoke Show has presence.
Deep black acetate gives the frame its weight visually, while the distinctive Chrome Hearts silver detailing introduces another layer entirely.
Look closely and the eyewear begins to feel almost jewellery-like.
The sculptural silver hardware, crosses and decorative elements break through the black acetate, creating small moments of light across an otherwise dark, substantial frame.
It didn't need another element fighting for attention.
The challenge was therefore not to make the lenses louder.
It was to give them presence without competition.

From Prescription to Interpretation
James hadn't initially come to us asking for an elaborate lens design.
He needed prescription lenses for his new frame.
During the conversation, however, we introduced the possibility of taking the eyewear further.
Not by changing what he had chosen.
By designing the lenses around it.
That distinction is important to Lens Art.
A prescription tells us what somebody needs optically.
It doesn't necessarily tell us what their finished eyewear should become.
For James, we wanted something that could remain subtle enough for everyday wear while giving the Smoke Show another personality when the environment changed.

A Whisper of Blue
The starting point was a freeform single vision prescription lens.
Then we introduced colour.
Not a conventional sunglass tint.
Not something designed to dominate the face.
Just an extremely subtle graduated blue tint.
A whisper of colour.
Indoors, the blue is light enough that the glasses remain completely wearable as everyday prescription eyewear, but there is enough colour present to give the lenses an identity of their own.
On the face, they have presence.
Looking through them, the cooler tone can soften the visual character of harsh artificial lighting and creates a subtly cooler view.
Against the deep black acetate and silver Chrome Hearts detailing, that small amount of blue feels deliberate without becoming decorative for the sake of it.

Why Start With Colour?
Most photochromic lenses are understood through a very simple idea:
relatively clear indoors → dark outdoors.
Lens Art allows us to approach that differently.
By introducing a permanent tint before the photochromic technology activates, we can begin designing the lens from its resting state.
James doesn't have to wait for sunlight before the lenses become interesting.
The colour already exists.
The photochromic then builds upon it.
That means we're not simply designing how dark a lens becomes.
We're designing how the eyewear moves between different environments.

Then the Light Changes
Outside, the second part of the interpretation begins.
We paired the custom blue gradient with Marma Dinamica Grey photochromic technology.
As UV exposure increases, Dinamica begins adding density to the lens.
The subtle blue disappears into something considerably darker.
Grey develops through the lens until the eyewear takes on an almost blacked-out appearance.
And on the Smoke Show, that transformation works particularly well.
The darker lens reinforces the depth of the solid black acetate, while the silver Chrome Hearts detailing becomes even more pronounced against it.
The frame hasn't changed.
But its attitude has.

Two Sides of the Same Smoke Show
Indoors, James has an everyday prescription pair with the slightest trace of cool colour.
Outside, the same eyewear becomes significantly darker and more mysterious.
It isn't simply a clear pair of glasses becoming sunglasses.
The starting colour, activated colour, frame materials and surface reflections have all been considered together.
That gives the Smoke Show two distinct expressions while retaining the same underlying design language.
Whisper blue indoors.
Deep smoke outdoors.
The Final Layer — Elite Blue
There was one final decision.
The anti-reflective coating.
For this commission, we chose Elite Blue.
Its primary role is optical: helping control distracting reflections across the lens surfaces.
But within Lens Art, coatings can also contribute to the appearance of the finished eyewear.
Elite Blue introduces a subtle residual reflection across the lens.
Most of the time it remains understated.
Then the light catches it.
Blue appears.
Move the frame again and that reflection can develop into a slightly ethereal purple hue.
Against black acetate, dark grey photochromic lenses and oxidised silver detailing, that reflection becomes the final layer of the composition.
Not a mirror.
Not an obvious coloured coating.
Just something that reveals itself occasionally.

Looking At It. Looking Through It.
There are always two sides to colour in eyewear.
There is what everybody else sees when they look at the glasses.
And there is what the wearer experiences looking through them.
For James, both mattered.
The subtle blue gives the eyewear a little more presence indoors while creating a cooler visual character through the lens.
Move outdoors and Dinamica Grey provides the stronger sunglass state.
The Elite Blue surface reflection then adds something that exists primarily for the object itself — another small detail that becomes visible only under the right light.
This is where a prescription lens stops being merely something fitted into a frame.
It becomes part of the eyewear.

The Interpretation
James came to us with an exceptional new frame and a prescription to fill.
He didn't need outrageous lenses.
The Chrome Hearts already had enough personality.
What it needed was consideration.
A small amount of blue gave the lenses presence indoors.
Dinamica Grey gave the frame another personality outdoors.
Elite Blue introduced a reflection that appears only when the light finds it.
Three relatively restrained decisions.
Together, they completely change how the finished eyewear feels.
The Chrome Hearts Smoke Show was already luxury eyewear.
Lens Art made the lenses belong to it.
