Jacques Marie Mage Yoshi — Burnt Amber

LENS ART® INTERPRETATION

Jacques Marie Mage Yoshi — Burnt Amber

Frame: Jacques Marie Mage Yoshi
Lens Art: OG Amber custom tint × Dinamica Brown × Glamour
Client: Alexi
Design Character: Warm · Refined · Vintage · Contemporary

THE FRAME

Some frames impress you immediately through weight and presence.

The Jacques Marie Mage Yoshi surprised me for almost the opposite reason.

When I first handled it, I wasn't completely convinced. It felt noticeably lighter than the substantial acetate construction I tend to associate with JMM. But the longer I spent with the Yoshi, the more I understood it.

The lighter acetate makes an already substantial shape remarkably wearable. The proportions are strong without becoming cumbersome, while the sculpted transparent lower section gives the frame another dimension as light passes through it.

It has since become one of my favourite recent JMM designs.

And Alexi already knew exactly how good it was.

THE CLIENT

Alexi discovered Lens Art through our YouTube channel.

He was already a serious eyewear enthusiast and no stranger to having custom lenses made. What interested him wasn't simply the idea of changing the lenses in his frames.

It was seeing what else lenses could become.

Custom colour combined with photochromic colour. Unusual transformations. Lens designs that could alter both how a frame looked and how the world felt through it.

After discovering us, Alexi attended one of our eyewear exhibitions, where our Lens Art tint laboratory gives clients the opportunity to experience the process alongside Marma Vision.

Eventually, he entrusted us with two of his Jacques Marie Mage frames.

This Yoshi was one of them.

THE INTERPRETATION

The frame didn't need rescuing.

It needed elevating without losing its restraint.

Against the black and translucent acetate, I wanted something warm enough to create contrast but sophisticated enough that the eyewear still felt effortless.

The starting point became one of our own colours:

OG Amber.

This isn't a stock lens colour. It is a custom Lens Art tint mixed specifically to create the amber character we wanted.

Against the Yoshi it does something beautiful.

The warmth breaks away from the monochromatic frame while the golden-brown tone gives the whole piece an almost vintage quality.

But vintage in the best possible sense.

Not nostalgic.

Timeless.

THROUGH THE LENS

Lens colour isn't only something other people see.

You live behind it.

OG Amber gives the world warmth and definition. Whites become warmer, contrast feels pronounced and the overall visual environment takes on that beautiful golden character amber lenses can produce.

There's something inherently uplifting about looking through them.

They work beautifully through the day, but amber becomes particularly interesting as light levels soften.

This wasn't simply about finding a colour that suited the Yoshi.

It was about finding a colour that Alexi would enjoy experiencing.

THEN THE LIGHT CHANGES

This is where the second layer of the design appears.

We combined OG Amber with Marma Dinamica Brown photochromic technology.

Dinamica Brown has a character of its own. Rather than becoming a flat, conventional sunglass brown, there is a subtle red warmth within the activated colour.

Layer that over our amber foundation and something entirely different develops.

Amber becomes burnt brown.

Deeper.

Richer.

Almost chocolate-like, with warm reddish undertones.

And suddenly the transparent lower acetate of the Yoshi becomes particularly important. The lens and frame begin sharing similar tonal territory rather than competing with one another.

The result feels as though the lens colour belongs within the material of the frame.

TWO PERSONALITIES

Indoors and in lower UV conditions, the Yoshi carries its warm OG Amber identity.

Step outside and Dinamica begins adding density and brown into that existing colour.

It isn't simply:

light brown → dark brown.

It's a progression of colour.

Amber → burnt amber → warm brown.

And that distinction is important to Lens Art.

Photochromic technology doesn't always have to be treated as a functional switch between clear glasses and sunglasses.

It can become another ingredient in the colour design.

THE FINISH

Finally, we added Glamour.

With certain lens colours, the coating should almost disappear.

With others, it can become part of the composition.

Glamour works particularly beautifully around amber, orange, red and brown because its subtle warm reflection introduces a delicate golden quality across the lens surface.

Here, it complements rather than interrupts the palette.

It also provides the anti-reflective performance we wanted, helping reduce reflections and glare while retaining the richness of the colour.

The final combination became:

OG Amber × Dinamica Brown × Glamour.

Three individually subtle decisions that together completely change the personality of the Yoshi.

THE RESULT

What I particularly like about this commission is that nothing feels added simply for effect.

The amber has a visual purpose.

The photochromic has a functional and aesthetic purpose.

The coating has a functional and aesthetic purpose.

And every decision responds to the frame and the person who will actually wear it.

It can be dressed beautifully.

It can be worn casually.

It can sit quietly in softer light and become considerably richer outdoors.

Warm. Sharp. Comfortable. Refined.

Perhaps even a little gentlemanly.

Alexi was over the moon when he finally saw the Lens Art vision brought to life.

So were we.
