The Golden Hour | Jacques Marie Mage Earl 13/500 – Lens Art®
THE GOLDEN HOUR
Jacques Marie Mage Earl 13/500 · Custom Tinted Photochromic Progressive Lenses
Some Lens Art® commissions begin with a prescription.
Others begin with a frame.
This one began with a collector discovering that the lenses could become part of the collection too.
Ram is passionate about exceptional eyewear. He already owns some beautiful pieces, chosen for their design, craftsmanship, rarity and character.
But he hadn't yet started fitting many of them with prescription lenses.
And perhaps more importantly, he hadn't realised quite how much those lenses could contribute.
Not simply to his vision.
To the frame.
To his style.
And to the way the world feels when he looks through it.
He trusted us with one particularly special place to begin:
a Jacques Marie Mage Earl, number 13 of only 500 produced.

Reglazing A Jacques Marie Mage Collector Frame
When someone sends us exceptional eyewear for reglazing, our first instinct isn't to ask:
“What lenses can we put in this?”
It's:
“What should these lenses become?”
Ram needed progressive prescription lenses, but beyond that he trusted us with the creative direction.
The Earl already has enormous character.
Japanese-crafted titanium. Strong navigator proportions. Gold metalwork. Contrasting detailing. A distinctly retro attitude.
Going louder would have been easy.
We deliberately went the other way.
Refined.
Warm.
Interesting.
Individual.
But completely wearable.
The lenses needed to feel as though they belonged to the Earl rather than simply having been fitted into it.
That became the starting point for The Golden Hour.

Designing The Custom Tint
At the foundation of the composition is a completely bespoke burnished brown-to-cognac-to-amber bi-gradient tint.
From the outside, the lenses appear relatively rich.
But looking through them tells a different story.
The world remains surprisingly bright.
Warm.
Embracing.
Almost cinematic.
We wanted to recreate some of that atmosphere you experience towards the end of a beautiful day, when everything becomes warmer and softer without feeling dark.
A Golden Hour you can actually look through.
And because these are custom tinted progressive prescription lenses, the colour wasn't designed independently from the optics.
Prescription, progressive lens design, fitting measurements, tint density and frame all needed to work together.
Why Brown, Cognac And Amber?
The Earl already contains a considerable amount of gold.
We didn't want to compete with it.
The warm custom tint actually helps temper the polished titanium, shifting the eyewear towards something more burnished and mature.
There is a slight 1970s character to it.
Retro without becoming nostalgic.
Luxury without becoming obvious.
And because the tint is graduated, the composition retains lightness and transparency rather than turning the Earl into a conventional dark sunglass indoors.
This is where bespoke tinting becomes very different from simply selecting “brown” from a catalogue.
The exact colour, density and gradient become part of the design.

Then Marma Dinamica Avion Takes Over
The permanent custom tint is only the first personality of the lens.
Outside, Marma Dinamica Avion photochromic technology begins to activate.
Avion carries an inky blue character.
But photochromic colour doesn't sit independently on top of a custom tint.
The colours interact.
As Avion develops over the warm cognac and amber composition beneath it, the finished lens moves towards a deeper grey-blue shadow.
And something interesting happens to the Earl.
The warmth recedes.
The lens becomes cooler.
The gold metalwork suddenly projects forward.
The activated colour also begins to communicate with the Earl's darker contrasting detailing, making the architecture of the frame feel more pronounced.
It isn't loud.
It's demanding.
Same Jacques Marie Mage.
A completely different atmosphere.

What Is A Custom Tinted Photochromic Lens?
This commission is a good example of why we have become so interested in custom tinted photochromic lenses.
A conventional photochromic lens might begin essentially clear indoors before becoming darker outside.
Here, the lens already has a permanent custom colour.
The burnished brown, cognac and amber bi-gradient remains part of the eyewear indoors.
Then Dinamica Avion responds to changing light and develops another layer of colour over it.
So rather than:
clear → dark
we're designing:
warm custom tint → cooler adaptive composition.
The lens has more than one visual personality.
And both are intentional.
For clients who already own exceptional eyewear, these combinations can be incorporated into our luxury reglazing service, subject to prescription, frame and lens suitability.

Why Marma Dinamica?
One of the reasons we use Marma Dinamica extensively within Lens Art® is the freedom it gives us when designing coloured photochromic lenses.
Rather than treating the photochromic colour as the entire lens specification, we can explore how it interacts with:
- bespoke permanent tints
- gradients
- prescription lens designs
- coatings
- mirrors
- the materials and colours within the frame itself.
For a collector piece like the Earl, that flexibility matters.
We're not trying to make the frame accommodate a lens catalogue.
We're trying to design the lens around the frame.

Designing For The Person Looking Through It
There is another part of coloured lens design that photographs can't fully communicate.
How does the world actually feel through the lens?
We think about two experiences.
The external aesthetic
How does the lens interact with the Jacques Marie Mage frame?
How visible are Ram's eyes?
What happens to the gold when Dinamica activates?
How does the eyewear change under different light?
And:
The internal atmosphere
How does Ram experience the environment through his custom tinted prescription lenses?
Does it feel warm?
Bright?
Calm?
Shaded?
Does the photochromic transition create an atmosphere he actually enjoys?
Because ultimately Ram spends considerably more time looking through these lenses than looking at them.
Both sides deserve designing.
Progressive Lenses Come First
For all the discussion about colour, there is something more important underneath it.
Ram needs progressive lenses.
Lens Art® doesn't sacrifice optical performance for appearance.
His prescription, progressive lens design and individual fitting measurements establish the optical foundation of the commission.
Everything else is then composed around it.
The objective isn't:
beautiful lenses
or:
excellent vision.
It's both.

The Final Layer: Glamour
The composition is completed with Glamour.
Its subtle cosmetic character sits naturally across both states of the lens.
Warm permanent tint indoors.
Cooler Dinamica activation outdoors.
Rather than introducing another dominant colour, the finish simply completes the relationship between lens and frame.
Nothing in this commission needed to shout.
Every layer needed to belong.

The Beginning Of Another Collection
Perhaps the most exciting part of this commission isn't the tint.
It isn't Dinamica.
It isn't even the Earl.
It's what Ram discovered.
He already understood the pleasure of collecting exceptional eyewear.
Now there is another dimension to explore.
Each frame in a collection can ask a completely different question.
One may need restraint.
Another may invite colour.
One could become an extraordinary custom sunglass.
Another might explore faceting, engraving or an entirely new lens silhouette.
The frame doesn't have to represent the end of the creative process.
Sometimes it's where the next one begins.
Ram has more pieces waiting.
We have ideas.
