Can you add a permanent tint to a photochromic lens?

Yes, with the right lens technology.

But it isn't as simple as taking any Transitions®, ZEISS or photochromic lens and dropping it into a dye bath.

Different photochromic systems are manufactured in different ways. Some lend themselves beautifully to permanent base colours, gradients and more creative combinations. Others operate within a much more controlled manufacturer catalogue.

And increasingly, manufacturers themselves are recognising that people don't necessarily want their photochromic lenses to become completely clear indoors.

What Is a Custom Tinted Photochromic Lens?

A conventional photochromic lens changes its density when exposed to activating light.

Indoors, many modern photochromic lenses become essentially clear.

Outdoors, their photochromic chemistry activates and the lens becomes darker.

A custom tinted photochromic lens adds another element:

permanent colour.

That colour remains present when the photochromic system is inactive or only lightly activated.

The lens therefore has two behaviours working together:

Permanent tint
+
Adaptive photochromic colour

Rather than simply going:

clear → dark

it might become:

light petrol → deeper blue-grey

or:

soft brown gradient → richer warm sunglass

or:

subtle violet → evolving green/purple composition

Why Would You Tint a Photochromic Lens?

For some clients there is no reason to.

A beautifully clear photochromic lens that becomes dark outdoors may be exactly right.

Lens Art isn't about adding things simply because we can.

But permanent colour can completely change the personality of a photochromic lens.

It gives the glasses character indoors

Some people simply prefer a suggestion of colour in their eyewear.

A very light tint can allow the eyes to remain clearly visible while making the lenses feel more intentional.

It can connect the lens to the frame

Colour can echo, soften or contrast with the materials around it.

A petrol gradient against white gold.

Brown against Bordeaux acetate.

A muted green within brushed titanium.

The lens begins to feel designed with the frame rather than installed afterwards.

It changes what the wearer experiences

This is often forgotten.

There are really two sides to coloured lens design:

the external aesthetic — how people see the lens;

and

the internal atmosphere — how the wearer experiences the world through it.

Those are not always the same.

Some very expressive lenses can feel surprisingly natural to look through.

Others subtly change contrast, warmth, brightness or mood.

That internal experience matters just as much to us as how the glasses photograph.

Marma Dinamica: Why It Is Particularly Suited to Custom Tinting

Of the photochromic technologies we currently work with, Marma Dinamica gives us some of the greatest creative freedom.

Marma publicly offers its Dinamica Sun Fashion system with a chosen base colour and absorption, including solid, gradient and double-gradient designs, which are then combined with one of the Dinamica photochromic colours. 

In the Dinamica workflow we use, the permanent lens colour is created first and the photochromic treatment forms a separate surface-applied stage.

That separation is important.

It means we can think about the permanent tint as a genuine part of the lens design rather than merely accepting whatever residual colour the photochromic system gives us.

We can design:

the indoor tint

then consider:

the adaptive colour

then:

how the two interact.

The Creative Possibilities With Dinamica

A Dinamica commission might include:

Can Transitions® Lenses Be Custom Tinted?

This requires a more nuanced answer.

Transitions GEN S is designed primarily as a clear-to-dark photochromic system.

The current GEN S portfolio includes eight colours; Ruby, Sapphire, Amethyst, Emerald, Amber, Grey, Brown and Graphite Green, and Transitions describes GEN S as fully clear indoors before activating to colour outdoors. 

Selected Transitions lenses can also form part of more bespoke tinted designs through specialist manufacturing routes.

But that doesn't mean:

every Transitions lens can simply be tinted however you like.


Compatibility depends on the lens material, photochromic product, laboratory, coatings and the result being requested.

This is why we assess every custom Transitions commission individually.

Transitions Is Moving Towards Permanent Colour Too

There is another interesting development.

Transitions has introduced Color Touch in selected markets.

Unlike conventional GEN S, Color Touch deliberately retains colour indoors and then activates further with changing light.

The manufacturer offers five permanent colour families and two effects. Gradient and washed

Availability currently varies by country and laboratory, so we wouldn't imply every Color Touch option is available through every UK route.

But its existence is important.

It confirms a broader direction in optical design:

people increasingly want adaptive lenses that have personality even before they activate.

That is precisely the space specialist custom tinting has been exploring for years.

Custom Tinted Transitions vs Manufacturer Colour Systems

There's an important distinction.

A product such as Color Touch is a manufacturer-defined system.

The manufacturer controls:

  • colours
  • densities
  • gradient style
  • photochromic behaviour
  • manufacturing specification.


A fully bespoke Lens Art tint is different.

Depending on the available manufacturing route, we may be able to consider the actual:

  • colour
  • density
  • gradient depth
  • positioning
  • relationship with the frame.


Neither approach is automatically better.

Some clients want the predictability of a catalogue system.

Others want something nobody else has.

What About Transitions XTRActive?

Transitions XTRActive occupies another position.

It is designed for clients who want greater activation in intense light and some activation behind a car windscreen.

Unlike GEN S, XTRActive already retains a degree of tint indoors.

That changes how we think about additional colour.

A client wanting:

very subtle indoor character + strong outdoor performance

has a different requirement from somebody wanting:

an expressive gradient + adaptive fashion colour.

The product needs to follow the purpose.

Not the other way around.

Can ZEISS PhotoFusion X Be Custom Tinted?

This is where we need to be particularly precise.

ZEISS PhotoFusion X is an extremely controlled photochromic system.

ZEISS describes it as using new photochromic dye compounds with a speed-optimised carrier matrix, taking the lens from clear indoors to sunglass-level darkness outdoors. 

ZEISS currently offers PhotoFusion X in multiple catalogue colours and officially supports prescription PhotoFusion X with ZEISS DuraVision Plus Flash mirrors

Technically, plastic ZEISS lenses can be coloured during manufacturing—ZEISS itself describes conventional plastic lens tinting as a dip-dye stage before coating. But that does not mean every PhotoFusion X lens can automatically be ordered with an arbitrary permanent custom tint.

In practice, most European ZEISS laboratory routes we encounter remain relatively catalogue-led.

We have seen evidence of further PhotoFusion customisation elsewhere and continue to investigate manufacturing routes for it.

But until a specific lens combination is confirmed, we don't promise an off-catalogue custom PhotoFusion X tint.

Sometimes expertise means knowing what not to promise.

But ZEISS Has Another Answer: AdaptiveSun

This is an important part of the conversation.

If someone says:

“I want a ZEISS lens with permanent colour that also adapts to changing light,”

PhotoFusion X isn't necessarily the only, or even the most appropriate answer.

There is ZEISS AdaptiveSun.

AdaptiveSun is fundamentally different from PhotoFusion X.

PhotoFusion X works approximately:

clear → dark

AdaptiveSun works:

dark → darker.

ZEISS describes AdaptiveSun as a prescription sunglass lens with an existing base tint that uses photochromic technology to become darker as light intensity increases. 

This makes AdaptiveSun particularly interesting when the client actually wants adaptive sunglasses, rather than an everyday clear indoor lens.

What Colours Are ZEISS AdaptiveSun Available In?

ZEISS currently lists AdaptiveSun in:

  • Grey
  • Brown
  • Pioneer
  • Blue


with both solid and gradient versions. 

Selected solid AdaptiveSun designs can also be polarised, and ZEISS supports mirror/flash finishing within its sunglass portfolio. 

This creates a surprisingly rich catalogue ecosystem:

solid adaptive tint

gradient adaptive tint

polarised adaptive tint

adaptive tint + mirror

all within an official ZEISS manufacturing route.

One important restriction: ZEISS specifically states that AdaptiveSun Blue is not suitable for driving because it does not meet the relevant red-signal recognition requirement.

PhotoFusion X or AdaptiveSun?

Think about how you want to use the glasses.

If you want:

everyday eyewear that becomes essentially clear indoors

PhotoFusion X is the more natural ZEISS starting point.

If you want:

prescription sunglasses that retain colour all the time and become darker in stronger sunlight

AdaptiveSun becomes extremely interesting.

That's a far more meaningful distinction than simply asking:

“Which ZEISS photochromic is better?”


They're designed for different visual experiences.

Mirrors introduce another layer entirely.

A flash mirror changes how the front surface of the lens interacts with light.

It can add:

  • warmth
  • coolness
  • depth
  • reflectivity
  • contrast with the frame
  • another colour relationship.


ZEISS officially supports DuraVision Flash mirror options with PhotoFusion X. 

AdaptiveSun can also sit within ZEISS's wider mirror-finishing sunglass ecosystem. 

Marma likewise provides extensive possibilities for combining colour-reactive photochromics with mirror finishes.

This is how a lens can progress from:

prescription

to:

prescription + tint

to:

tint + photochromic

to:

tint + photochromic + mirror

without any single element necessarily becoming the hero.

Solid Tint or Gradient Tint Under a Photochromic?

Both can work.

But they feel very different.

Solid Tint

Colour remains relatively consistent across the whole lens.

This can work beautifully where you want a clear, deliberate lens identity.

Gradient Tint

The upper portion carries more colour while the lower area becomes lighter.

That can:

keep more of the eyes visible

feel softer indoors

visually lengthen or soften a frame

interact more dynamically with photochromic activation.


For many Lens Art commissions, the gradient becomes almost architectural.

Its placement is designed around the lens shape rather than automatically starting and ending at arbitrary positions.

What Happens When the Photochromic Activates Over a Tint?

This is where you can't simply rely on colour names.

Imagine:

Petrol + Blue Ocean

That doesn't necessarily become a darker petrol.

Or:

Violet + Jade Green

That doesn't simply become “violet and green.”

Colours interact.

The final appearance depends on:

  • base colour
  • tint density
  • gradient
  • photochromic colour
  • activation level
  • lens material
  • temperature
  • UV exposure
  • mirror
  • coating.


Photochromic performance itself is affected by environmental conditions such as UV exposure and temperature; both Transitions and ZEISS explicitly acknowledge those variables. 

This is why physical samples and real-world testing are so valuable.

What Do Coloured Photochromics Actually Feel Like to Wear?

This is one of the areas we think optical marketing often misses.

Manufacturers understandably show how attractive lenses look from the outside.

But ultimately:

you spend your time looking through them.

In one of our own real-world comparisons, we wore four warm-spectrum photochromics:

Transitions Ruby

ZEISS PhotoFusion X Burgundy

Marma Dinamica Amaranth

Marma Dinamica Pink Rio

All four occupy broadly similar warm colour territory.

Yet the experiences were completely different.

Transitions Ruby felt deeper and closer to a traditional sunglass experience.

PhotoFusion Burgundy remained remarkably balanced and natural.

Dinamica Amaranth felt expressive externally but calm and easy to wear.

Pink Rio created a warmer, brighter and more obviously emotive atmosphere.

None was “best”.

They were different.

That distinction eventually becomes more important than a specification sheet.

Speed Isn't Everything

Photochromic manufacturers invest enormous amounts in activation speed.

And rightly so.

Transitions GEN S, for example, is explicitly engineered around rapid activation and fade-back. 

ZEISS similarly positions PhotoFusion X heavily around its transition performance. 

But Lens Art asks another question too:

Do you actually want the fastest possible transition?

Some people absolutely do.

Others enjoy seeing and experiencing the atmosphere shift.

For an expressive coloured photochromic, the journey between states can actually be part of what makes the lens enjoyable.

There isn't one correct philosophy.

Can Custom Tinted Photochromics Be Prescription Lenses?

Yes, subject to the selected technology, prescription range and manufacturing combination.

Possibilities can include suitable:

single vision lenses

progressive / varifocal lenses

occupational lenses

prescription sunglasses

non-prescription lenses.


The prescription and optical design always come first.

Lens Art isn't successful if the lenses look extraordinary but don't provide the vision the wearer needs.
